Lateral Placement

To Nisus, lateral placement doesn't mean sending out résumés. For our clients, lateral placement is a multi-stage process that involves making an assessment of their competitiveness; identifying potential opportunities; preparing profile materials and developing a detailed term sheet; project marketing; offer negotiation and closing; and post-transition integration and career managment.

Lateral Placement is our most frequently requested transactional service. Professionals who select us to represent them understand that they will receive dedicated, responsible, objective representation, and are aware of the tremendous competitive benefits available to those who enter the market with their own representative to guide them through the process. From target selection through compensation and contract negotiation, Nisus is there, by its client's side.

Success for our clients is achieved through sensitivity to their motivations and goals, and advocacy of their potential for continued professional achievement. We have a demonstrated ability to anticipate and respond to rapidly changing market conditions, and stress flexibility in approaching every assignment. In all cases, our client controls the process, and we utilize our knowledge and skills to preserve that control for them. Our goal is representing sophisticated professionals whose searches are intelligently structured, conducted and negotiated.

We recognize that each professional is unique, and every assignment exposes us to new challenges as our clients seek balance between their quest for professional distinction and their desire for greater personal control and gratification. Our lateral placement services are designed to address these seemingly irreconcilable goals. We approach each assignment with an open perspective and without preconceived notions. Only one thing remains the same in each case: our commitment to providing sound, objective representation.

The initial phase of our work involves developing a clear understanding of our client's objectives, based in part on their responses in the Client Profile & Survey completed by all new clients. We make a realistic assessment of their qualifications and accomplishments and develop a fuller appreciation of their potential, to determine the range of prospective targets and opportunities that may be considered. We make pragmatic judgments based on our knowledge of the market and the competitive obstacles our client is likely to face.

We examine the realm of possible options in light of our client's professional and personal objectives, and our own assessment of their potential and competitive strengths. We appreciate that not every alternative is either desirable or feasible, and are able to suggest other avenues. In recommending prospective targets and alternatives, we work closely with our client and those involved in their decision making process including partners, spouses, clients, etc., to set guidelines for the type of target that is most suitable and desirable. We review the characteristics of the targets to determine which may have an interest in our client's particular profile, weighing compatibility of the clients and practice, management structure and style, and the target's ability to offer the compensation and other consideration our client seeks. This information, along with ideas provided by our client, results in the development of a definitive target list that we evaluate, eliminating inappropriate names, and a suggested sequence in which targets will be approached. Each step in the Nisus process increases our chances of completing a mutually successful transaction for our client.

Before approaching prospective employers, materials are prepared to provide an overview of our client's expertise and qualifications. This material is reviewed and approved by our client before it is made available to a limited number of targets, also approved by our client. From our extensive experience, we know that a carefully prepared presentation can be crucial in generating serious consideration and prompt responses. By presenting the facts in a systematic, positive fashion, we enable interested parties to avoid time consuming duplication of efforts, which we find to be an essential factor in our ability to initiate discussions with decision-makers, which greatly increases the likelihood of timely, candid, and confidential responses. We remain vigilant at all times and take necessary precautions to achieve prompt results, while maintaining the confidentiality essential to our efforts.

In the later stages of the process, we implement a negotiating strategy with our client, making certain that the views of all parties are analyzed and correctly understood, and work closely with all principals to structure a mutually acceptable compensation package. Perhaps the most important role we play at this stage is to help both sides keep the negotiations in perspective and moving forward. When an offer is received, we work closely with our client to make certain their interests are properly safeguarded in whatever agreements may be negotiated and executed.
